Iceland Data brings together the three official series that describe Iceland's tourism economy and updates them every month as the sources publish. Airport arrivals come from Statistics Iceland, based on the Icelandic Tourist Board's counts of foreign passengers departing Keflavík. Hotel statistics come from Statistics Iceland's monthly accommodation survey, which records guest nights by nationality, room capacity and occupancy for every registered hotel. Spending comes from the Central Bank of Iceland's figures for foreign payment-card turnover.
Each dashboard shows the latest month, the trailing twelve months, and a comparison with the same period a year earlier. Trailing twelve-month totals are the best guide to the underlying trend, because Iceland's tourism is so seasonal that a single month tells you more about the calendar than about the market.
Beyond the dashboards, the site publishes a report for every month since 2003 and a review of every year, each built from the same data, so that any period can be looked up and compared. The yearly statistics page traces the whole arc from a few hundred thousand visitors in the early 2000s, through the boom that peaked in 2018 and the collapse of 2020, to the plateau of around 2.2 million a year that has held since 2023.
The site is independent and is not affiliated with any government body or tourism company. Figures are reproduced as published and may be revised when the sources revise them. The data files behind every chart are available in the Explore tool, which also allows custom comparisons and exports.
